Store policies

I'm inquiring as to the co-op's official policy on footwear. I have been coming to the co-op for well over 10 years and have never been asked to put on footwear. Today an employee told me I needed "to wear shoes because of the health code." I explained there was no such health code in existence [either in New Jersey or any other state] and whether it was the actual store policy, which I would be happy to comply with. She very unconvincigly said, "yeah, sure, you need some shoes on."
This isn't just about whether customers have to wear shoes. It's about whether co-op workers can arbitrarily decide how other customers can behave based on their own misconceptions.
Thank you in advance for any responses as to official co-op policy.
