| Description | Juneteenth commemorates the anniversary of June 19th, 1865, when the Union Army arrived in Galveston, Texas to enforce 1863's Emancipation Proclamation, thereby freeing the last people still enslaved by the fallen Confederacy. It has been celebrated every year since 1866. |
